G & S Mine Building Fire
Hegins Twp, Schuylkill Co, PA

March 27, 2000

A fire destroyed a winch system and shanty at the G&S Coal Co., located about a mile off Route 125 in Hegins Township, Schuylkill County. Two miners were in the mine at the time of the fire and had to climb 500 feet up the slope to get out of the mine because the fire disabled the winch that operated the buggy they would normally ride in. The shanty was completely destroyed. Loss was estimated at more than $20,000, including the winch, shanty, clothing and mining lights and other equipment stored inside. The heat from the fire melted a nearby car's front lights, grill and driver's side, and the fire burned some brush, trees and undergrowth about 25 feet from the shanty. About 20 firefighters battled the blaze and had it under control by 10 a.m. Volunteer firefighters from Hegins, Valley View and Sacramento, and the Hegins Area Ambulance Association all responded, while Joliett and Donaldson firefighters were on standby.
