A first alarm assignment was dispatched for a report of a structure fire at the rear of 509 Main Street. Dispatched were Engine and Truck 22, Engine and Squad 23, and EMS. Engine 22 responded with a crew of six and proceeded to the scene by way of Pine Street, pulling into the alley behind Dale's TV. Initial sizeup showed a large two story garage fully involved, with extension into the rear of the P & B Video Store that fronted on Main Street. Engine 22 laid about 300 feet of 5-inch hose from the hydrant at the corner of Main and Pine Streets and pulled several hand lines to attack the fire from the alley. Truck 22 responded with a crew of five and positioned on Main Street at the front entrance to P & B Video. Truck 22 used the hydrant in front of the former Doc Herrold residence on Main Street. The truck crew forced the front door of the video store, advanced a handline to the rear of the structure, and prevented further extension of the fire into the building. Engine 23 accessed the scene from Market Street, going down the alley and setting up to the rear of the former Helt's Furniture Store. Their water supply was fed by a line from Engine 22. Squad 23 entered the alley off North Second Street and staged near side 1 of the garage. Engine 22's deck gun was employed at the onset to blitz the advancing fire until water supply was established and handlines were placed in service. A knockdown was achieved in about seven minutes. Company 24 was placed on standby in their quarters. Extensive overhaul was undertaken and numerous hot spots were extinguished. The garage was destroyed, and the video store had damage to the rear store room. The condition of the garage was so unstable that the borough's backhoe was brought in and the remaining parts of the structure were knocked down for safety reasons. Units were released by command after overhaul was complete.
