Liberty Hose Co. No. 2 - Incident Detail #2750

Company 22, Engine and Rescue 23, Engine 24, Rescue 21, Truck 20 for the out of service Truck 22, Engine 27 for RIT and Medic 6 dispatched class one to 15 South Second Street in Lykens on the 4th floor of Rattling Creek Apartments for a structure fire. Engine 22 responded with 5 and Utility 22 with 2. On arrival at a 4 story brick 100 foot by 75 foot multi-family housing unit the Engine took side D and advanced a 400 foot pre-connect off the rear of the Engine and advanced it inside and up the stairwell to the 4th floor. They advanced the line to the reported apartment on fire and were met with fire from a stove and extending up the wall and into the cabinets. Engine 23 arrived and laid in from the hydrant at Main and Arlington Street and staged on the C side of the structure where they advanced a secondary line up to the 4th floor. Engine 24 and Rescue 21 arrived and staged in the 100 block of South Second Street and sent their manpower forward. Truck 20 arrived and took side A. Fire was knocked down in a few minutes, with extensive overhaul needed along with checking for extension. Crews from Rescue 21 and Engine 24 checked the other floors of the building for possible smoke conditions and found none. All residents of the building were evacuated outside and staged on the B side of the building in a safe area. Engine 27 which was enroute to handle the RIT assignment was placed in service while enroute. The building manager, maintenance supervisor, and representatives from Dauphin County that own the building all arrived on scene along with the head of Human Services. After ventilating smoke from the fire floor and taking air quality readings, the residents of all but the affected apartment were permitted to re-occupy the building and crews began wrapping up equipment. Command turned the building over to the Building Manager and the box was placed available.
