July 30, 1944

Fire was discovered in the upper portion of a large barn on the farm of Frank Bendigo in Orwin at 4 o'clock in the afternoon on Sunday, July 30, 1944. The barn was completely destroyed, along with 65 tons of hay, five tons of straw, 80 bushels of wheat, a hay loader, plows, and other small farming implements. It is presumed that sparks from the fire also ignited a smaller barn on the farm of Henry Bendigo, who was tax collector of Porter Township. This barn was also completely destroyed along with a garage and a large chicken house. The total loss from this fire was estimated in excess of $10,000, part of which was covered by insurance. Firemen from Lykens, Williamstown, Tremont, Tower City, Reinerton, Muir, Orwin, and Sheridan responded to battle the flames.
