Firemen from Wiconisco and Lykens responded to the home of "Red" Smeltzer, just north of the Wiconisco Baptist Church in Wiconisco, shortly after noon on Friday, July 22, 1944. An oil stove had exploded and the resulting fire caused several hundred dollars damage to the interior and exterior of the home before the firemen brought the flames under control by using chemicals.
