October 4, 1963

The barn of Donald Neagley off Route 225 (Swa Nea Acres Farm) just North of Elizabethville was destroyed by fire on this date.

Elizabethville's Tom Welker remembers:
"I remember while walking home from the Lykens Elementary School for lunch and hearing the siren, I ran toward the station just in time to watch my Dad pulling the '41 out the door hollering out to the arriving crew that they were going to Elizabethville. Later that day Dad loaded up Mom and me and drove us past the lane to the farm and the foundation was still full of fire and belching smoke. Millersburg, Berrysburg, Gratz, and Lykens assisted the Elizabethville crews. ...Just one of those memories of my Dad that makes me smile like it was yesterday."
(Note: Tom Welker grew up in Lykens, the son of Chal Welker - a very active Liberty Hose Company member and officer.)
