April 25, 1962

Hundreds of acres of trees and brush were burned in a fire that was set by an arsonist on Berry and Broad Mountains. The fire burned a 3 mile long stretch between Loyalton to near Lykens. 400 firemen battled this blaze. No loss was given.

Elizabethville's Tom Welker remembers:
For several days walking home from the Lykens Elementary School, Lykens was enveloped in a smoky haze. We used to stop at Mom Bellons Restaurant for a Coke on the way home to wash the smoke down. I remember my Dad and the Guys driving around in the 41 International checking houses in Glen Heights and the West end of town on Railroad Street. The glow on the Mountain was spectacular at night. The neighbor took us for a ride down the Minnichs Hit road and came out in Muckleratz. Big Flames could be seen on Sheepshead.
